April 30

Sam’s team has almost caught up.  One inning to go and it’s 7 - 6.  Ethel, her skin goose-bumped, is up on the back row of the little grandstand with the other mothers, the rest of them bundled up, having to sit around on this blustery day.  Now Sam is up.  A right-handed hitter; Ethel is the only one in the family who does things left-handed.  He has a closed stance, with his right foot almost out of the batter’s box.  Ethel notices this and remembers the time he twisted that ankle when his diaper slid off and he tripped on it.  He cried and cried and Dr. Schellenberg came over but it was just a sprain.  Karl Schellenberg was a good doctor.

Wow!  Sam hits a triple to right field!  They’ve tied it up, at least.  As Teddy Harper scores and Sam rounds second, the mothers jump up and down and cheer.  Ethel has to hold her breasts as she jumps.  Otherwise they would hurt.
