another Memo from the Commissar

It is time to address the weekly “adorations”.  In the village square from seven to eight p.m. on Wednesdays the Taoist Committee ties D. to a cross-like structure which allows their accomplished tongues full access to her anatomy.  This was done with my approval but the villagers have turned it into a religious service, with a crucifix on a tall pole while they kneel and pray around her.  I can’t understand that Latin gibberish but the prayer is repeated each time she approaches a climax, while she looks up at her Jesus and I suppose pleads for strength.  Their droning serves as a background to her screams and, eventually, her resigned sobs.  Apparently they are inspired by one of those ancient martyr fables, a girl who refused to abandon her faith and was tortured in public.  Though this is a strange kind of torture; they see it as being dragged unwillingly into the Devil’s pleasure.  After witnessing this bizarre scene, and after much thought, I have decided that it is not a spur to rebellion and I will not interfere.  These stupid Catholics are not angry at what is being done to the girl whose ordeal is obviously seen as a reflection of Jesus’s.  Instead they seem to wallow in misery, their guilt and her shame feeding on each other.  The Taoists are now augmenting the event by putting a numbered sign over the cross at every climax.  Last week they went up to 12, which is a tribute to their skill.
